Today was our only day off until Labor Day so we wanted to do something fun with our little girl. We decided to visit McKinney’s own nature museum, the Heard Museum. It was literally in our own backyard!
We got there bright and early at 9 when they opened and I am SO glad we did! Kelly was all into doing a trail so I gave in and so I had to follow… trails and stroller do not go hand in hand! We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves, no one was there!
Our first trail led us to the Animal Exhibit. Think small, very small, outdoor zoo. They had a few animals and Gracie liked it but it was very small.
These cute, little kangaroo like things were really fun to watch. They were all just staring at Gracie. 2 of them even got up and started boxing with each other, it was really funny!
The museum had a pretty neat butterfly garden. You walked through a screen door into a green room type place and there were flowers and butterfly’s everywhere flying around.
They were really hard to take a picture of because they moved so fast.
We tried getting her to walk out but that just wasn’t happening..
After the animals and butterflies then we really explored the trails. There were 6 to choose from and we found the shortest (so we thought) and headed on through it. It was supposed to show more of the prairie type area. It was really pretty. We couldn’t believe this was right in our own backyard…
Kelly was having to take the stroller through all types of terrain! Next we found the wetland trail. It was pretty interesting- actual wetlands that are dry right now but fill up in the fall and spring. We were thankful for a very nice boardwalk that boy scouts built all the way around!
We decided to make our way back and it was a LONG way back. I was ready to just get out and see civilization again. We had to walk and walk and walk. Gracie was such a trooper. I thought I was being a trooper myself. I am very much a city girl- I don’t like to sweat and be stinky!! Not to mention the place was allergy city with all the trees and grass- not my cup of tea. I was just thankful I wore good walking shoes and not my regular flip flops I wear daily!!
We finally found the main building and thank goodness for A/C! There was a small snake exhibit and a cool artifacts room with dinosaur bones, jewels, and other things. Here are the final few pictures we took as we were leaving.
Gracie, well, she was just thankful for a snack and juice by then!
And there you have it, our fun Labor Day morning. We were all so hot and tired. No pictures with me, I was a hot mess. We had came back home, had lunch, and well all took naps. Gracie slept almost 3 hours, she was zonked. (I was too!) Happy Labor Day!!!

Your subject line "Have you heard the news?" totally had me thinking you might be expecting!! Guess not, but I enjoyed the pics anyway! She's always so super cute. Looks like it was a great family day. We're in CO right now enjoying the mountains of Dillon. Coming home Wed. Let's make plans soon!
