We were able to get away for the night to celebrate our 6th year anniversary. It was the first time we’ve gone anywhere for our anniversary and it was so nice! Thanks to Groupon, we got a very good deal on a room (a $500 room supposedly). GG and Pop were happy to keep our kids (Jack and Gracie) so we could have the night off for fun!!
Here are the kids all ready to go:
Aren’t they so cute??? Gracie was beyond thrilled to be going in the car and she got to hold his leash. For some reason she kept calling him Jacks. “Jacks go with me in the car?” “Come here Jacks.” It was funny. After we dropped the kids off we got my car all packed up and hit the road. We didn’t go far. Our first stop:
It never disappoints! We couldn’t get into our room until 3 so we had a late lunch and watched a little soccer. We hit 121 again and 25 minutes later we hit up:
The Bass Pro Shop!
Kelly had a gift card to use up.I had never been there so it was neat to walk around and see everything. We shopped a little then hit our 5 minutes later we hit our get away destination:
The Gaylord Texan Resort
After hearing valet parking was going to be $24 a night we kindly self parked in the $16 self parking garage. This place was so neat but SO over priced with stuff. A bottle of water was $3.50. Yes, I typed that right.
Anyways, our room was not quite ready so we were able to leave our bags and walk around. Right now they have the Alice in Wonderland exhibit going on so it was so neat all decorated. There were Alice characters walking around. Probably would have scared Gracie but still fun!
This was so cute they had these sculpted out of sand.
Can you find me???
A huge atrium was in the middle that connected the hotel areas together. There was a River walk area, hill country and something else, can’t remember! Here are some pictures of the atrium inside.
It was sorta like San Antonio river walk but air conditioned!! Finally , our room was ready. Here is what our room looked like:
I would never have paid $500 for the room like they said it normally went for but it did have a living room and separate bedroom/bath. We also had a little balcony that we really didn’t need but owell!
I really wished I had taken more pictures of Alice people. I kept thinking that I would come back but I never did. We just ran out of time. Also, we were there on Sunday so a lot of places closed. I saw so many cutie little girls dressed up with their moms because one of the separate Alice things was to have tea with Alice. So cute! I can’t imagine how much that cost though!!
As soon as we checked in we headed to the pool and it was so crowded!! This is where we discovered the $3.50 bottle of water. There was a pool bar though and if you ordered a glass of ice water it was free. But at that point we were ready to have fun and not just drink ‘ice water’!! We swam and laid out and read. I people watched and eavesdropped on conversations (so fun!) while pretending to read!! I also was on the hunt for better pool chairs. We got there at prime time so there weren’t many chairs left but as soon as I saw people get up I saved chairs. I think we moved at least 3 times. A lot of people left for dinner around 6ish so I nabbed 2 good seats right in front of the pool. We stayed here for the rest of the night until we left!
We drank a lot of these!
The best strawberry margaritas!
We’re not the best self photographers. We tried 3 times and this was the best!! We got some nice sun and relaxed. Just what we wanted and needed. I laughed at people with kids screaming. It was nice to be away from 2 year old drama!!
After awhile we finally went in to get dressed. We wanted to check out this 2 story night club, the Glass Cactus, that was on site that overlooked Lake Grapevine. We ended up taking a little shuttle there because it was a little ways away. I wondered why our shuttle everyone had on these name tags…
We get there and it’s a private party. Oops. Some motorcycle convention going on and we didn't’ have the nifty name tags you needed to get in. We pretty much got turned down at the door from mean lady door hop. We found a side area and met some other people that said “Did you guys leave your tags too?” We were like “umm yeah, we did. Too bad” (This guy proceeds to tell us they were all hear for this motorcycle convention. Then we said’ “We really didn’t leave our tags, we aren’t part of the convention” While this was going on his friend was trying to get other people to let them in through this side entrance. Finally someone did and the guys says “want to come too?” So we basically were crashing this private party!! I was a nervous wreck. Kelly wanted to go in more but we were the ONLY ones w/o name tags and these green bracelets. We took a few pictures….
Ha, this is me saying “hurry up and take my picture before we get kicked out!” There was no way I was going to ask someone else to take a picture of us. I was just thinking any minute some guard was going to come by and kick us out. I wish I had more guts for sneaking and and crashing private parties, but unlike my husband, I dont!!
We stayed all of 5 minutes then walked back to the main part of the hotel. We were disappointed we couldn’t stay more (normally the club is closed Sun-Wed). We found a sports bar type place to eat at. Really, really expensive and not that great. It was fun otherwise though! We just don’t normally spend a small fortune on bar food!
So this is us 6 years later!!!
And it was the last picture I took. Monday morning we slept in ( so nice!!) and went back to the pool. We skipped the $18 per person breakfast buffet, thanks!! We hung out by the pool all morning until we had just enough time to pack up and check out.
Thanks to GG and Pop entertaining our kids. They had a great time and so did we!!!

That looks so awesome. Every bit of it. Maybe next year the hubby and I can do something like that! :) Glad you got to get away! :) Happy Anniversary!
What fun! I would have liked to crash your weekend to people watch and eavesdrop (and lay out kid-free) with you! Ha. Glad it was fun!
